Greenfield Police Department conducts mock DUI crash for GHS students

Prior to Prom this year, Chief Nate Alderfer headed up a mock DUI crash for the students at Greenfield High School. The students were able to observe first-hand, the response of emergency personnel to a fatal crash that involved a drunk driver. Students learned that one bad decision can end a person's life in an instant.

A special thank you to Air Evac Lifeteam 27, the Greene County Coroner's office, the Greenfield Fire Department, Greene County EMS and the Greenfield School District for helping with this event!

City of Greenfield passes 1% Infrastructure Sales Tax

On March 30, 2026, members of the Greenfield City Council met in a special session to review and vote on Mayor Meyer's proposed 1% infrastructure sales tax. Mayor Meyer had advised the council that since his being elected, it has become abundantly clear that the city levies insufficient tax revenue to where the city is unable to maintain current infrastructure. Furthermore, improving/replacing existing infrastructure is essentially impossible without obtaining grants that are not always available or attainable, plus these grants can take months and/or years to obtain.

The city has been speaking with city engineers, the Greene County engineer, and the city attorney in attempts to address this issue. Mayor Meyer advised that he has learned that other surrounding communities already have sales taxes such as this in place and that Greenfield would be wise to adopt its own ordinance to raise the necessary funds to address Greenfield's crumbling waterlines, sidewalks, and other constantly arising, costly issues. The city council met on March 30th to pass this proposed ordinance in time to meet the April 1, 2026 deadline for the fiscal year.

"I understand that we are not fond of more taxation, however, I was elected to fix these issues. It seems that costs have been kept low in Greenfield for decades, and for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, this has allowed Greenfield to slowly deteriorate, and without the ability to raise the funds needed, Greenfield will be looking at immense financial strain and perhaps even loss of services in the coming years unless we take these issues seriously and address them now. I do not want this to seem like something that was done in a quiet and hasty fashion, but rather I understand that the Greenfield citizens spoke when they elected me to tackle these very real problems and I will use the office of mayor to ensure that they are addressed.

This sales tax also allows those from out of town to assist in the raising of these funds, rather than putting all of the responsibility on the citizens themselves through higher property taxes. We will continue to seek grants that are applicable to Greenfield's needs." - Mayor Brock Meyer

Mayor and Police Chief speak with GHS government class

The city would like to thank Mr. Walker at GHS for inviting Chief Alderfer and Mayor Meyer to speak with his government class on March 5, 2026. Chief Alderfer spoke about the fourth amendment and how it applies to us today. Students asked questions about how varying, seemingly small factors can have a big impact in the court of law and how certain hurdles for law-enforcement protect the public.

Mayor Meyer spoke about local government operations. He explained their similarities and how they vary from state/federal government. He spoke of elections having real impacts on our communities, and the importance of knowledge and voting - from the federal level, all the way down to the local level. The mayor also spoke about how in the United States, the government is not some distant entity, but made up of everyday citizens like us, and with the right message and work ethic, all of us are able to make our voices heard, run for leadership positions, and be the change that we want to see.

Thank you again to Mr. Walker and the GHS students for your invitation, attentiveness and engagement!
